A British motorist who involved in a fatal road accident by sending a text message while driving her car has been sentenced to four years in prison after she was involved in a fatal accident. Although the cyclist rode through a red traffic light, the court found that the motorist was speeding and not paying sufficient attention to the other road traffic.
The motorist failed to see the cyclist who was crossing the road through a red traffic light. The court observed that the serious part of the motorist’s conduct was that motorist was sending a text on her mobile phone having just received one. It occurred at precisely the worst time because she failed to see the cyclist who was crossing the road, having gone through the red light. The motorist hit the cyclist at 45mph and later the cyclist died of injuries.
