SMS Attack on BlackBerry Smartphones – Update Device Software

According to an advisory published by Research In Motion (RIM), BlackBerry mobile devices are open to attack due to a certificate notification flaw in the smartphone’s software. The problem lies in the BlackBerry Browser dialog box that alerts users if the URL they have clicked on does not match the domain they are being sent to.

Using this security flaw, a malicious user could create a web site that includes a certificate that is purposely altered using null (hidden) characters in the certificate’s Common Name (CN) field or otherwise manipulated to deceive a BlackBerry device user into believing they have connected to a trusted web site. ‘Sexy Space’ SMS Virus May be the First ‘Zombie’ Cell Phone Network

For the first time criminal hackers may have succeeded in creating a network of “zombie” cellphones, infected without the owners’ knowledge with software that can be used to send spam or carry out cyber attacks. Symantec says that a piece of software known as Sexy Space may be the first case.

Sexy Space uses text messages reading “A very sexy girl, Try it now!” to jump between phones. The messages contains a link that, when clicked, asks the user to download software which, once installed, sends the same message to contacts stored in the phone. Read full story »

“Mobile Watchdog” Lets Parents to Spy on Their Kids’ Mobile Usage
