Google is developing “speech-to-speech translation” software for the first phone capable of translating foreign languages almost instantly. The basic system is expected to be ready within a couple of years. The new technology combines machine translation technology and voice recognition technology to produce software capable of understanding a caller’s voice and translating it into a synthetic equivalent in a foreign language. Google is investigating whether one or more employees may have helped facilitate a sophisticated cyber-attack from China that resulted in theft of its intellectual property. Chinese local media reports that some Google China employees were denied access to internal networks after Jan 13, while some staff were put on leave and others transferred to different offices in Google’s Asia Pacific operations. Google has denied rumours that it has already decided to shut down its China offices. Google is going to have talks with the Chinese government, before making any final decision on the matter. Google Docs is rolling out the ability to upload, share and organize any type of file using Google Docs. You get 1 GB of free storage per user, and you can upload files up to 250 MB in size. You can access your files using Google Docs from any web-enabled computer. Combined with shared folders, you can store, organize, and collaborate on files more easily using Google Docs. You can also search for document files you’ve uploaded or that have been shared with you just like you do with your Google documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs.
