What is BOLT?

BOLT is a fast mobile browser that offers an uncompromised browsing experience on even entry-level mobile phones. It is compatible with virtually any handset with Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0 support. In non-geek speak, this means “it works on lots of phones, even basic ones.”
Rather than offering a simplified, mini version of the Internet, BOLT provides users with an efficient, feature-rich way to enjoy full PC-style Web pages and rich media applications on all levels of mobile devices.

Is BOLT a better option than existing mobile browsers?

Yes. BOLT offers lightning fast, secure, PC-style Web browsing on high and low-end devices – you do not need a smartphone to use BOLT.
BOLT is a full featured mobile Web browser that supports widgets, direct Twitter and Facebook integration, streaming videos, RSS feeds, social media sites, Google Maps- you name it.

Does BOLT support Web sites in any language?

BOLT supports viewing Web sites in all Latin-based languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish, Swedish, and many others that are fundamentally Latin-based. Using the “Install Fonts” utility, you can also view Web sites in Cyrillic-based languages including Bulgarian, Russian, Belarusian, Serbian, Macedonian, Ukrainian, Moldovan, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Tuvan and Mongolian.

Can BOLT coexist with my phone’s default browser?

Yes. BOLT uses a unique profile and does not interfere with your device’s default browser in any way. However, it may bruise your default browser’s ego. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

What is BOLT lite?

BOLT lite was created in response to user requests, to allow BOLT to run on resource-constrained mobile devices with limited memory, CPU power, and bandwidth. While not as feature-rich as the regular version, BOLT lite features a small footprint (~154 KB) while retaining the benefits of BOLT’s client/server technology, resulting in extremely fast downloading of Web site content and reduced data cost. BOLT lite requires MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.0 or higher support.

Which BOLT features are missing from BOLT lite?

BOLT lite does not support the orientation settings (landscape or portrait), inline videos, video settings, transport protocol settings, copy-paste operations, favorites/feeds organization, inline editing, find in page feature, download manager, password manager, QWERTY shortcut keys for navigation, widgets, or 3XL magnification.

What is the difference between the signed and unsigned versions?

Each mobile device implements a set of security policies that determine if an application is allowed to run. As a security measure, some devices require downloaded applications to be signed with an appropriate certificate to be allowed to run.
BOLT is signed with third-party certificates from VeriSign and Thawte. These “signatures” enable the device OS to confirm BOLT’s authenticity, provide access to secure device APIs, and help ensure that BOLT is free from malware and/or viruses. Signed applications enable you to use BOLT with fewer permission dialogs for file and network access from your device’s OS.
However, a few platforms including Motorola P2K do not allow installation of signed builds. To enable installation on these devices, an unsigned version of BOLT, with no certificate, is also offered.

Which version do I need to install?

We recommend you install the signed versions (dual signed, VeriSign, or Thawte) first. If you have any trouble installing any of these three versions, install the unsigned version.
If you have a BlackBerry, you will need to install the BlackBerry-specific version of BOLT.

How can I install BOLT on my phone?

Downloading BOLT is a one-step process. You can quickly and easily install BOLT wirelessly using your phone’s default browser.

How can I connect to the Internet?

Generally, you will be connected directly to the Internet by simply launching BOLT.
However, in a limited number of cases, you may have to set up a new IAP (Internet access point) the first time you connect to the Internet through BOLT. An Internet Access Point (IAP) is a GPRS or high-speed connection provided by your telecom provider.

How can I add an access point?

Most mobile operators have a service that enables you to automatically setup an IAP via SMS. Please check your phone’s documentation for directions on how to do this.
For example, to set up an IAP manually on a Nokia Symbian-based phone:
a. Go to Tools > Settings.
b. Select Connection>Access points
c. Press Options left softkey (LSK) and select “New access point > Use default settings”
d. Move to “Connection name”, press “Options > Change” and specify a name for the connection.
e. “Data bearer” should be “GPRS” as it is by default
f. Scroll down to “Access point name”, press “Options > Change” and specify your access point name.

Now open a Web page in BOLT and select the IAP (Internet access point) you wish to connect through. Your phone will now automatically establish a connection with the Internet.
Note: You cannot use a WAP gateway as your Internet access point. Consult your phone’s help documentation to learn about adding an access point.

The Transport settings show two options, HTTP and Socket. Which one should I choose?

HTTP and Socket are used as the underlying transport protocols while establishing a connection between BOLT client and servers. With Socket, the connection between client-server is made once, and remains active throughout a session. With HTTP, a connection request is sent to the BOLT server each time a Web page request is sent from the client.
If your device does not support the Socket connection, we recommend you turn ON the HTTP transport mode to continue browsing.

What is the benefit of using Sockets?

I received an error “ERROR: 909 Application authentication failure” upon installing BOLT.
This authentication failure error message indicates that your device requires an Unsigned version. Direct your phone’s native browser to the Unsigned version in the download Web page or the email and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install BOLT.

For BlackBerry phones, you will need to install the BlackBerry-specific version of BOLT.

I received the alert message “BOLT has encountered an error.” What should I do?

BOLT may occasionally give this alert message if it fails to open a Web site. An error log is created that helps our engineers to track and correct site-specific issues. We recommend that you choose to send us this error log by selecting Menu>Send. You can also send us additional details on the error encountered by selecting Add Info from the Menu. If you do not wish to send us any details, select Cancel to continue browsing.

I cannot play videos on my device. Can you help?

Yes we can!
BOLT includes a video configuration wizard that identifies the optimal video playback properties based on your devices’ capabilities. To run the video wizard,
– Load any Web page and select “Preferences” from “Menu”
– Click “Video Setting” button; BOLT opens a pop-up window featuring a test video
– Press “Play” to start the video,
If you are able to play the video successfully, select “Yes” and press OK; BOLT saves the current video settings.
If BOLT fails to play the video at first attempt, select “No” and press OK. BOLT reloads the video player with alternate settings, press the “Play” button and select the appropriate option depending on whether you are able to play the videos or not. If BOLT fails at the second attempt to play the video, future videos will be downloaded to your device for playback through the native media player.

I cannot enter text on my touchscreen device.

– Uncheck the “Inline Editing” check box
– Select “Save”.

My BlackBerry often shows a dialog box with the message “The application BOLT has attempted to access *.boltbrowser.com. Would you like to allow this?” Is this normal?

Yes. This message is generated by the BlackBerry firewall each time a connection is set with our servers. You can turn off this prompt by configuring your BlackBerry’s firewall options. To enable the firewall,
– In the device options, click “Security Options”
– Click “Firewall”
– Set the Status as “Enabled”
– Press the Menu key and click “Save”.
Once the firewall is enabled, BOLT will prompt to set the connection permissions the first time you connect to the Internet. In the connection message, select the “Do not ask for any http connection” check box and click “Allow”.
You can reset the firewall options to receive the connection prompt again.

I cannot select menu options on my BlackBerry device.
BOLT’s menu works correctly with BlackBerry default themes and most of the downloaded themes. The behavior you are experiencing is observed with select BlackBerry downloaded themes. To solve this issue, please change your current BlackBerry theme to the BlackBerry default theme or try another downloaded theme.

I cannot view videos on my BlackBerry device; I received the error message “The media being played is of an unsupported format”. What should I do?

A few BlackBerry devices do not support inline video streaming. For these devices, we recommend you follow the steps below to watch videos:
– In BOLT, click the link for the video you want to play
– Press Play button in the BOLT video player. An alert message appears suggesting that the video is being transcoded and should be played in the device media player
– Press the Menu key and select “Launch”
– The device confirms if you want to Open/Save/Cancel the item; select “Save” and play the saved video file
– Use the Back key to return to BOLT.

The sound for the videos played by BOLT is not audible.
We recommend you enable “Warning Tones” in the Sound Profiles for your device or, change the current profile to “General” or “Discrete”.

Web page contents are not rearranged when I rotate my phone from landscape to portrait mode.
In order to provide you with a faster, more fluid, browsing experience, BOLT avoids connecting to the server when you change your screen orientation. To reflow your text alignment after changing from landscape to portrait mode, we recommend refreshing the Web page contents by selecting the reload page option via the left soft key.

I am unable to login to my personal email/banking account using BOLT. How can I resolve this issue?

The device you are trying to use does not support Secure Socket Layer (SSL). We recommend disabling the HTTPS security mechanism and then trying to login to your account. To change the security settings,
– Select “Preferences” from “Menu”
– Uncheck the “HTTPS” check box
– Select “Save”.

Where can I submit the feature requests or report bugs that I come across?
