edX was founded by the MIT and Harvard University in May 2012 to offer online university level courses in a wide range of disciplines to people worldwide at no charge. edX offers MOOCs [Massive Open Online Course] and interactive online classes in subjects such as law, history, science, engineering, business, social sciences, computer science, public health, and artificial intelligence (AI), from the best professors and universities. edX says that the team is willing to help users learn through cool tools, videos and game like labs. 3D virtual molecule builder is an example for such a lab. The edX courses can be attended at a pace, defined by the user at the comfort of one’s home or in a cafe. Users can earn Certificate of Mastery, or just audit the course.
edX’s virtual ‘classroom’ is open 24/7, and is for everyone.Users can use the latest in peer-to-peer social learning tools and connect with like minded people, from around the world.
At present, edX offers as many as 62 different courses and has 28 technology partners, the virtual schools including the founders MIT and Harvard. IIT Bombay is the only technology institute which cooperates with the project at present.
edX aims are to expand access to education for everyone, to enhance teaching & learning on campus/online and to advance teaching & learning through research. edX is not for profit, hence it is of open source platform yet collaborative and financially sustainable.
