Apple selected Instagram as the iPhone app of the year, in its App Store Rewind 2011. App Store Rewind 2011 is company’s list of the year’s best iTunes content.
Apple called Instagram the year’s “definitive photo-sharing app” and noted that its filter effects make it almost impossible to take a bad picture. The free app allows users to apply one of 17 custom filter to their camera phone pictures and then instantly share them with friends via Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr.
Instagram says it currently has more than 14 million users, who have posted 400 million images worldwide. Though the app is only available for iOS users, Instagram revealed yesterday that an Android version is on the way.
