Twitter Acquires TweetDeck for $40 Million

Twitter LogoOne of the most popular third-party Twitter applications TweetDeck has been taken over by twitter for $40 million including both cash and Twitter stock as per a report.

Twitter has not yet confirmed the deal; Twitter PR account tweeted, “For all those who might be curious, we continue to not comment on rumors.” Even though the deal is yet to be announced, it is reported that the papers confirming the deal were signed on Monday.

Twitter, which allows people to send 140-character text messages(Tweets), has become a popular communications tool for celebrities and is one of the Web’s most popular social networking services.

Tweetdeck LogoTweetDeck is an Adobe AIR desktop application.Like other Twitter applications it interfaces with the Twitter API to allow users to send and receive tweets and view profiles.

Users can split the program into columns which show different things, for instance tweets from friends. It also allows users to split the people they follow into groups, a very useful feature to many users. The client supports URL shortening which can be done on-the-fly.
