Microsoft announced that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is released to manufacturing (RTM) and will be available by Mid-March at Windows Update site. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 improves the performance, reliability and compatibility of Windows Vista. Vista SP1 brings new improvements that are based on the feedback received using Customer Experience Improvement Program, Online Crash Analysis, and Windows Error Reporting tools. With SP1, copying or moving files around the PC or network should now be up to 50% faster – this has been the main problem I was facing with Vista. In addition, on many kinds of hardware, resuming a Windows Vista-based PC from sleep is faster on SP 1.
In Mid-March, Vista users who visit the Windows Update site can choose to install Service Pack 1. Vista SP1 will also be available to manual download from the download center on microsoft.com in mid-March. Vista team identified issues with a few device drivers which did not follow the standards. So SP1 through Windows Update will only be offered to PCs that are not affected by the incompatible device drivers. If you may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow you to install SP1. You may then need to just reinstall the problematic device drivers.
In mid-April, Windows Vista SP1 will be delivered to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. Any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1.
