I have been using the default SMTP email server provided by my web hosting company for ananthapuri.com email since 2002. That was implemented using iMail from ipswitch. It is an old program created more than a decade back with no modern email functionality like spam controlling, tagging/labeling, search, etc.. The webmail interface still uses html frames and pop-ups, making it difficult to use.
Do you own a domain name email like [email protected] and want to have a better webmail interface? Let me suggest two options for you.
Option 1: Migrate Your Domain Email to Google Apps
Recently I migrated my domain email for ananthapuri.com to Google Apps. Now I am using this totally free Google service, which is as reliable as Gmail. I can chat with my Google Talk friends from my personal email id, access calendar, docs, and email services from Google. I need not worry about the mail server being down nor do I have to report problem tickets nor call them for mail delivery issues. Everything works as smooth as Gmail’s proven email platform.
Do you own email @ yourdomain? Sign up for Google Apps.
Option 2: Access [email protected] from Gmail.
If you have a mail server for your domain, it must be supporting POP3 protocol. To access it from Gmail, kogin to your Gmail account, go to Settings -> Accounts, scroll down to Get mail from other accounts: (Download mail using POP3). Refer to Google help on Mail Fetcher for details. After you set up Mail Fetcher, Google will check your personal mail account often, and new emails will appear automatically in your Gmail inbox.
You can compose messages using the Gmail interface and have them appear to be sent from your personal email address, by setting up custom From address.
Using these options, you can aggregate and manage all your emails from various POP3 supported domains to your single Gmail account. When you send the email, you can select the From address from a drop down list. And use all facilities provided by Gmail for all your email addresses.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
