India’s 3G Auction Getting Delayed for 6 Months Longer

3G telecom bidders may have to wait six months longer to start operations. The defence services have asked for 6 months of extra time for testing and security clearances before they vacate the spectrum (20 MHz for 3G and 25 MHz for 2G services) and shift to an optical fibre network that has been developed for them by BSNL. The telecom service provider has committed to handing over the new network by the end of October. This would extend the 3G auction to June 2010 instead of December this year. […]

National Optic Fibre Authority (Nofa) to have 66% of BSNL Employees

According to a proposal finalised by the department of telecommunications, about two-thirds of BSNL’s employees would be shifted to a newly created PSU, the National Optic Fibre Authority (Nofa).The proposed company Nofa would have the mandate to lay optic fibre across the country and then lease that network to telecom firms for providing broadband services. The government would set up the authority to lay over 12 lakh km of optic fibre throughout the country, spending around Rs 40,000 crore. […]

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has a promotional offer on its CDMA Data Services, the NIC and EVDO cards which costs Rs. 2,500 and Rs 3,500 respectively will be sold at Rs.1,680 and Rs. 2,100 respectively for limited period.

BSNL currently offers unlimited data access to both NIC and EVDO card users for a fixed monthly rental of Rs. 250 and Rs 550 respectively. However from July 1, 2009 the monthly charges will be revised to Rs. 350 and Rs. 600 respectively. […]
