Mobile Numbers in India may Migrate to 11-Digit by Prefixing ‘9’

Department of Telecom’s (DoT) technical arm, Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) has recommended to amend the National Numbering Plan 2003 for migration to 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing digit ‘9’.

According to TRAI, the total number of wireless subscribers is 488 million by October 2009. With the explosive growth in the mobile telephony, the government is understood to have begun the exercise to amend the numbering plan to migrate to 11-digit cellular number from the current 10-digit in order to accommodate more users.

The proposal is there with DoT and the Telecom Engineering Centre committee had suggested this. Nothing has been finalised yet and no direction has been sent to the operators. The DoT note said operators need to make necessary arrangements for the migration from January 1. [via]
