Google Fonts are the font files for web applications, which is available in many languages. These fonts are made available for Professionals and Developers. All the fonts are of Open Source type and are free to share. Users can customize the fonts for personal use or collaborate with the original designer to improve them. These fonts can be used privately or commercially.
Google Fonts Team says, “Our goal is to create a directory of web fonts for the world to use. Our API service makes it easy to add Google Fonts to a website in seconds. The service runs on Google’s servers which are fast, reliable and tested. Google provides this service free of charge.”
Many of Google’s own web pages are already using Google Fonts, such as Google’s About page and Google’s World Wonders Project which use Open Sans. The list of fonts and font families which were specifically made for Indian languages are given below.
Droid Sans Tamil
Droid Sans Tamil is a traditional, low contrast Tamil typeface made for harmonizing with the Latin sans serif typeface family, the Droid Sans. The typeface has Apache License version 2.0.
Karla Tamil Inclined
Karla Tamil Inclined is a Grotesque sans serif typeface family that supports languages that use the Latin script and the Tamil script, with two styles, Regular and Bold. The typeface holds SIL Open Font License version 1.1.
Karla Tamil Upright
Karla Tamil Upright and Karla Tamil Inclined are of the same family. The typeface holds SIL Open Font License version 1.1.
Lohit Bengali
The Lohit Bengali font is from the Fedora Project. The typeface holds SIL Open Font License version 1.1.
Lohit Devanagari (Hindi)
The Lohit Devanagari font is from the Fedora Project. The typeface holds SIL Open Font License version 1.1.
Lohit Tamil
The Lohit Tamil font is from the Fedora Project. The typeface holds SIL Open Font License version 1.1.
Sometimes the characters in a text will not be displayed properly, when a text is rendered by the computer. It happens so because no font that supports them is available to the computer. When this occurs, small boxes are shown to represent the characters.The small boxes are called “tofu”. To solve this issue, the Noto font families were made.
