With Yahoo! Messenger for SMS, you can access Yahoo Messenger functionality simply using SMS functions from your entry level phones. You can use text messaging shortcuts to sign in, sign out, change your status, see who’s online, send a message or reply to friends. You’ll stay online and available by sending text messages to your IM friends, so you can continue the conversation with your online friends.

To login to Yahoo Messenger from your phone using SMS, first send an SMS to 58242. Then, send an SMS text: in [Yahoo! ID] [password]. Do not include brackets. If your Yahoo!ID is chatsalot77 and your password is 123456, your text should read: in chatsalot77 123456. Leave a space between in, your Yahoo! ID and your password. Your contacts will now see you as mobile. If you sign into the product from your phone, some carriers will send you an SMS that says you’re logged in.
To send an instant message to your Yahoo! Messenger contacts using their Yahoo! ID. To begin, address a text message (SMS) to: 58242. Then type: to [Yahoo! ID] [message] If your contact’s Yahoo!ID is johndoe85 and your message is hello john, your text should read: to johndoe85 hello john. Leave a space between to, your contact’s Yahoo! ID and message. Click Send/OK.
To reply, just select Reply and type your message. Messages with over 160 characters may be delivered via multiple text messages, depending on your carrier. Click Send/OK.
To view all your contacts, address a text message (SMS) to 58242 and then type get all. A list of all your contacts will appear. Note that online contacts are identified with a *. To send a text message (SMS) to your Yahoo! Messenger contacts, press Reply and type: to [Yahoo!ID] [message]. Then press Send. [reference]
