A study conducted on cell tower radiation by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT – Bombay), reports that cell tower radiations possess more harm to children than adults. The study revealed that electromagnetic radiation from cell towers penetrate skull of a five-year old by 75% where as it is 50% for a 10-year child and 25% for an adult.
“The younger the child, the deeper is the penetration due to the fact that their skulls are thinner and still developing. Hence, it’s critical that children under 16 use cell phones only for short essential calls as they have much bigger danger of getting a brain tumor,” said Girish Kumar, Electrical Engineering Department, IIT, Bombay.
Kumar noted the cell phone industry was becoming “another cigarette industry, which for long kept claiming smoking is not harmful. In fact, cellphone/tower radiation is worse than smoking as one cannot see it or smell it, and its effect on health is noted after a long period of exposure. Unfortunately, all of us are absorbing this slow poison unknowingly.” [via]
The report suggests certain remedial measures for reducing the cell phone radiation effect: An adult should not use their cell phone for more than 18 to 24 minutes daily and young children should restrict cell use only for essential calls. The report also recommends to tighten the radiation norms by government without causing inconvenience to users. The report was submitted to the Department of Telecommunications (DOT), India Government.
