One of internet’s biggest file sharing sites – LimeWire was shutdown in US, following an injunction issued by the US district court in New York. The injunction had prohibited Lime Group from providing services such as searching, downloading, uploading and trading of files, particularly music.
“As a result of our current legal situation, we have no choice but to wind down LimeWire Store operations,” LimeWire said in a statement on Friday.
The shutdown thus saw the end of the four years dispute between Lime Group and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). LimeWire was founded in 2000 by Mark Gorton and has since involved in allowing people to share music, movies and TV shows free of charge over the internet.
The case will resume in January 2011 for assessment of damages caused to the music industry.
