Broadband Wireless: Reliance Industries to Acquire Infotel

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire a substantial stake in Infotel Broadband Services (P) Ltd, which has emerged as a successful bidder in all the 22 circles of the auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Spectrum conducted by the DoT. RIL will invest about Rs 4,800 crore by way of subscription to fresh equity capital at par to be issued by Infotel Broadband. Google to Offer Ultrafast (1Gbps) Consumer Broadband in the US

In an effort to offer improved access to the Internet, Google plans to create fast, cheap and ubiquitous fiber-to-the-home Internet broadband networks with one-gigabit-per-second (1Gbps) speed. The broadband connections will be as much as 100 times faster than most cable and DSL services. Google hopes to offer the service to at least 50,000 people and as many as 500,000. It will announce which communities will get the service later this year. According to Derek McManus, chief technology officer for O2 UK “Watching a YouTube video on a smartphone can use the same capacity on the network as sending 500,000 text messages simultaneously.” This means, distributing mobile TV and VOD (Video On Demand) to an audience of that size is another matter, especially when mobile networks are feeling the strain of high volumes of data traffic.
