The latest estimates from global research group Gartner says India is expected to see sales of about 220 million mobile handsets in 2011 due to greater mobile telephony penetration. India is one of the quickest growing mobile handsets markets in the world and boasts millions of mobile phone users with new users increasing every month.
Last year, around 175 million handsets were sold in India while 50.7 million mobile devices and 3 million smartphones have been purchased in the first three months of this year alone. In the face of fierce competition, local and Chinese brands account for over 50 per cent market share. The market has more than 150 brands to cater to the growing consumer base.
The Gartner report says that price competitiveness and value for money devices from local and Chinese players are giving a tough competition to big global brands. [source]
