Rufus is a free tool that create a DOS bootable USB Flash Drive (Boot a USB Drive to DOS), and can now also create a Bootable USB from an ISO. Rufus works much like the HP USB Format Tool “HPUSBFW”, offering options to format the drive as FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, mark the drive bootable or active, and install a DOS environment to boot into. Additional features include the ability to check the disk for errors, create a volume label, and set cluster size.
It can be be especially useful for cases where:
- [advt]You need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, etc.)
- you need to work on a system that doesn’t have an OS installed
- you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
- you want to run a low-level utility
