State Bank of India’s (SBI) will soon introduce a mobile banking service, “mobile wallet“. It will be a stored-value account based on a customer handset. SBI’s mobile wallet is expected to become operational either by the end of September this year.

Customers would not be levied any charges by the bank for opening a mobile wallet and for mobile-to-mobile transactions. High-end mobile users can use the service through an application provided by the bank, while low-end mobile users can use SMS, reports moneylife.

In mobile banking, the consumer sends a payment request via a short messaging service (SMS) text message or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) to a short code and a charge is applied to the customer’s phone bill or, in the proposed SBI scheme, a mobile wallet. The vendor is informed of the payment success and can then release the goods or service.

The SBI application being used by high-end mobile users will allow customers to withdraw cash up to Rs 5,000. The whole transaction process will be secure as the data will go through end-to-end encryption. However, an SMS-based transaction will not allow any withdrawals, but will allow the consumer to use a mobile only for small payments.

It is expected that the charges for withdrawals would be 1% of the cash withdrawn from an account. Currently, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allows only Rs 5,000 to be withdrawn through such mobile transactions. it is reported that SBI has already reached an agreement with various service providers like Vodafone Essar, Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Tata Docomo and Idea, for providing mobile wallet services.

Recently, SBI allowed its customers who had mobiles not equipped with Java or GPRS to access its application State Bank freedoM – making it available from all application bases, over Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), and over USSD. State Bank freedoM service offers transfer of funds, viewing of the balance and mini-statements of the customers’ accounts, payment of bills, request for cheque book, recharge of prepaid mobile connections, viewing of demat account details, top-up of direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV services, and m-commerce transactions.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) announced it’s plans to launch a mobile banking platform. The platform will help mobile subscribers to send money orders electronically through text messages (SMS). The SMS by the sender will be encashable at all post offices in the country.

In order to send money, go to the nearest post office and transfer the money by way of an SMS. The SMS will contain a unique code. The person who receives this SMS real time, can go to his nearest post office and collect the money by showing the code. This will also help those who do not have a proper address for physical delivery of the money order.

As the second phase of the implementation, mobile phones can be used for even buying goods at the local stores, using the mobile authorization process from the bank. The mobile money transfer platform had been test-piloted in Chandigarh. SBI and YES Bank had come forward to participate in BSNL’s mobile banking service platform. BSNL expects to roll out the service in association with the Indian postal department, after getting the Reserve Bank of India’s approval.

Amazon launched “Amazon Mobile Payments Service (Amazon MPS)”, which enables existing Amazon customers to use the payment and shipping information in their Amazon.com accounts to make purchases from their mobile devices. Customers will experience easy purchasing with Amazon’s 1-Click checkout on their mobile phones.

Amazon MPS can be used within a native mobile application or on a mobile website. Amazon MPS enables you to get a payment authorization from your customer while on a mobile website or within a mobile application, make one-time payments, enable easy 1-Click purchases, refund completed payments, and cancel transactions.

Amazon Mobile Payments Service provides developers and merchants with a payment option for their customers that is as easy and familiar as the checkout experience on Amazon.com – including the convenience of Amazon’s 1-Click checkout. After signing in from an Amazon MPS enabled device or mobile application, customers are automatically able to make future purchases from their mobile devices using 1-Click functionality. Through a simple set of API’s and an optimized mobile browser experience, developers and merchants can easily extend single or multi-use payment options to their customers. Developers and merchants who already offer Amazon Payments on their website can easily add the new mobile payment option for their customers without any additional backend technology development.

Amazon MPS is built on the same flexible, reliable, and secure Amazon Payments infrastructure that many developers and businesses are using today for their PC based checkout experience. The Amazon Mobile Payments Service optimizes the check out experience for mobile devices and provides tens of millions of Amazon.com customers the peace of mind and convenience of shopping on mobile third party sites using information from their Amazon.com account.

“We’re pleased to make it easier for our Amazon Payments developers and merchants to extend mobile payment options and the ease of 1-Click checkout to their customers,” said Howard Gefen, Director of Amazon Mobile Payments. “Amazon customers can now also make purchases on third party sites without needing to set up separate payment accounts—they simply use the payment information in their existing Amazon accounts.”

“A seamless purchasing process is one of the most important aspects to a great mobile shopping experience,” said Paul Reddick, CEO of Handmark, a leading creator and distributor of mobile applications and services, and an initial user of the Amazon Mobile Payments Service. “The Amazon Mobile Payments Service delivers a fast, easy and familiar mobile payment option millions of people trust and we are pleased to be one of the first to extend it broadly to our customers and partners.”

A survey by Forrester Research found that 15 percent of Japanese mobile phone users make payments and purchase products in stores with their phones, reports CNN. Only 3 percent of people in North America are expected to conduct mobile payments in 2012.

Analysts say that within five years, mobile phones in the United States will be able to make electronic payments, open doors, access subways, clip coupons and possibly act as another form of identification. These futuristic uses for phones are becoming reality in countries like South Korea and Japan, which typically are ahead of the United States in mobile technology.

At the end of 2008, there were an estimated 4 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, according to the International Telecommunication Union. That’s about two cell phone subscriptions for every three people. By 2012, 190 million people will make mobile payments.

The technology that turns phones into credit cards and IDs poses several potential problems. If phones replace wallets, would-be thieves will see every person walking down the street talking on his or her phone as a target for robbery. It would be the ultimate form of identify theft.

Squeezing the contents of a person’s purse into a phone relies mostly on a technology called near-field communication, which allows any enabled device to communicate with a cash register through a secure radio frequency. The technology is similar to the scanners and passes that allow commuters to pay for drives on a highway without stopping at a toll booth.

When a phone is enabled with near-field communication technology, shoppers can load bank and credit card information onto their phones and then scan them to buy goods at the grocery store, shopping mall, metrorail or any other place set up to read the device.

Similarly, phones could include scannable identification information. Eye scans and fingerprints would make phone IDs and payments more secure. The ID technology might work like a corporate security badge, which pulls up personal information when scanned.

Some hotels have played with the idea of using near-field communication technology to enable a guest’s phone to act as a room key.

People can make transactions with their phones through lower-tech means, too. Mobile banking apps use the Internet to allow people to transfer money and purchase goods online. And in some parts of the world, including India, text messages sent by mobile phone are used as a form of currency.

iPhone users in the U.S. and elsewhere already can upload plane tickets onto their phones and then scan a digital version of the ticket’s barcode instead of presenting paper tickets. USAA Bank has recently launched an application to deposit your check via iPhone.

There is hope that, eventually, bank customers here may have individual barcodes they can use to purchase goods in stores.

According to Reliance press release, Reliance BIG TV’s portfolio of easy recharge options now include Oxigen, Online Payment using Credit/Debit Cards or Internet Banking, Interactive Voice Response (IVR), Mobile Mode Payment (SMS) or just calling the toll free number 1800-200-9002. This strategic tie-up by Reliance BIG TV is a part of its customer service motto to offer convenient and user-friendly customer service experience.

Reliance BIG TV customers availing these easy recharge options will get an electronic 12-digit pin number from the retailer. The customer has to punch in the 12-digit pin number either through SMS or call 1800-200-9002 and follow the IVR instructions. This will credit the value equivalent to what is offered by a recharge voucher into their Reliance BIG TV account.

Reliance BIG TV has entered into a tie-up with “Oxigen” India’s first and single point recharge service. According to this tie up Reliance BIG TV will offer its customers the entire portfolio of Oxigen’s easy recharge option. Oxigen’s presence through 75,000 Pan India retail network will provide an ease of recharge convenience for Reliance BIG TV customers.

The tie-up with Oxigen immediately follows Reliance BIG TV’s roll-out of an extensive Recharge Voucher (RCVs) network across 6500 towns in India. Reliance BIG TV has put into place a network of close to 100,000 outlets spread over 10,000 towns including outlets like local grocery stores, gift stores, and utility stores. Reliance BIG TV has taken the route adopted by the telecom players to retail RCVs for pre-paid mobile connections. Retail outlets of almost every genre are being roped in to ensure maximum penetration and easy accessibility for customers. The existing network of 100,000 retailers, 250 Reliance Web Worlds, 219 Reliance Mobile Stores, and 40,000-odd telecom outlets which are sales points for the BIG TV DTH service will also stock the RCVs.

Reliance BIG TV offers monthly subscription packages ranging from Rs. 115/- to Rs.425/- (plus tax) across the News, Sports, Kids, Films, Lifestyle and Entertainment genres.

For recharges through the web, Reliance Big TV customers need to log on to www.bigtv.co.in, click on the ‘Recharge’ and follow the simple instructions on their computer screen. All they need to do is enter their Smart Card Number and click on the submit button to proceed. Reliance BIG TV customers can also recharge by a simple Recharge Voucher (RCV). These vouchers are available at Reliance World & Reliance Mobile Stores and with various dealers.

At any time to know their account balance, customers can call 1800-200-9002 (toll free) / 3033-7474 or SMS BTVBAL to 55454.

Visa announced plans to make mobile payment-related services broadly available to United States consumers by the end of the year. Central to this effort is Visa’s delivery of mobile applications for the Android platform, which will be available for download on Android-powered handsets and initially available to Chase Visa cardholders.

The first set of services that Visa is planning to develop for Android will allow Chase Visa cardholders to receive notifications to their mobile devices about transaction activity on their accounts; obtain offers from a wide array of merchants; and use the built-in location-based technology developed by Google to quickly map nearby merchants where they can redeem Visa offers and locate ATMs that accept Visa.

During an introductory period, Visa mobile services that will be developed for the Android platform will first be offered to Chase Visa account holders. Following this initial launch phase, Visa plans to work with additional card-issuing financial institutions to extend availability of its mobile services for Android to their Visa account holders. Visa is also developing a payment application that will enable consumers with Visa accounts to make mobile payments in retail locations nationwide, or while on the go, over wireless networks.

The Visa mobile applications developed for the Android platform will initially deliver three powerful services:

Alerts: Consumers will receive near real-time notification of purchase activity based on customized cardholder preferences. The consumer will be able to personalize the types of alerts delivered to their mobile device according to pre-selected parameters, such as the size of the transaction, or whether the transaction is in foreign currency. Because these alerts are triggered by the transaction as it passes through the Visa network, consumers will receive notifications almost immediately, typically before they even leave the store. This adds a new layer of peace of mind when using Visa, and a new way to combat fraud.

Offers: Consumers will receive targeted offers from merchants directly to their phone. These offers – ranging from discounts to loyalty offers – could be based on a consumer’s previous purchase activity. For consumers and merchants alike, this service will ensure the most relevant offers are sent in a timely manner, helping increase merchant traffic, loyalty and customer satisfaction.

Locator: The Locator service is expected to integrate with technology developed by Google, such as Google Maps and Google location-based services, to show consumers nearby locations of merchants sending them offers, or of an ATM that accepts Visa. The location would be called out on a map displayed on the mobile device screen.

Over the last two years, Visa has actively engaged with financial institutions, wireless operators, handset manufacturers, and technology providers to develop and test innovative mobile services. Visa is currently testing mobile payments, money transfer and value-added services with consumers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the U.K., and the U.S.

Visa’s investment in its mobile technology comes as more consumers in both developed and emerging economies adopt mobile devices and play a central role in commerce. The development of mobile applications for the Android platform is the latest example of how Visa is making mobile commerce a global reality. This will accelerate the migration from paper forms of payment to digital money.

During the initial period, interested financial institutions will allow consumers with the Nokia 6212 classic to use their Visa account to use the services. The services include contactless payments, remote payments, money transfer, alerts and notifications.

pay for goods and services

initiate mobile money transfers to other individuals with Visa accounts

receive near real-time notifications of activity on their Visa account

“opt in” to receive offers and discounts from merchants.

The Nokia 6212 classic includes integrated Near-Field Communications chipsets (NFC) which lets the mobile device behave like a contactless payment card, where consumers simply wave it within a few inches of a special point of sale reader to complete a Visa transaction. Nokia and Visa first demonstrated NFC technology in December 2005 with the launch of the first large scale NFC trial in the United States at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta.
